It and Thou (1989)
Philosopher Martin Buber speaks of the attitude toward others changing completely when one sees a person, an animal, a plant and/or even the Earth itself as a “thou” rather than an “it”. “Eminent Light” (1989) was the culmination of art as a means of vision-questing toward this longing. Just as deeper empathy and compassion emerged from Gerard Manly Hopkins’ (1844- 1889) “inscape” experience, Walter Inglis Anderson’s (1903-1965) “realizations”, and other artists’ recognitions of self as a shared, connected Self in Nature, God and man, my art told me/taught me that this is the only real currency worth the investment of a life.
