MSU’s Funderburk recognized in international Texas exhibit

T he show will be exhibited in Houston’s WAS-H Gallery (1601 West Alabama Street, in the Museum District) from March 8 through March 31, 2016, with a reception on March 6 at 4:00 p.m. Funded by a grant from the City of Houston through the Houston Arts Alliance, the exhibit is the premier annual juried exhibition of noted international artists by the Texas-based society of over 600 members.

“Flying Dream” is a part of Funderburk’s series “Dreams of Palladio: New Solar Myths”, inspired by the lucid, geometric architecture of 16th C. Italian architect Andreas Palladio, as well as by the artist’s and others’ somnambulistic or lucid dream flights. The subject/model in the watercolor/papier colle painting is both his wife, dancer Deborah Funderburk, and one of her dance company students, who seems to be effortlessly swimming through a IMG_4324Southwestern sky.

Funderburk, a William L. Giles Distinguished Professor at Mississippi State University, has taught painting and drawing in the Department of Art in the College of Architecture, Art, and Design since 1982.
