“Soul House”, a work painted in watercolor on Arches paper in 2019, is from the new painting series “Inflorescence- A Second Flowering” produced by Funderburk in 2018- 2019. The 12-color, fine art pigment print (sometimes called a “giclee”) was hand printed on fine archival paper at an image size of 22.5” x 31.5”, with a full sheet size (including margin) of 32” x 40”. Master printer Tom Joynt directed the reproduction process.

Inspired by the visionary boldness of revered artists/mentors such as Charles Burchfield, Eyvind Earle, and Katsushika Hokusai, Funderburk’s “Soul House” is a reflection of the artist’s close relationship with his Mississippi surroundings, presenting a deep forest of trees, steeped in mysterious light and shadow, with an autumn pear branch breaking the rhythm of verticals. Almost undetected in the play of these dominant natural forces is the hint of human presence in the roof line of a small shed. The striking, overall red color theme carries a story; “Soul House” resonates the artist’s belief in the necessity of a quiet, still room of one’s own, akin to the Japanese “viewing hut” where one might find and be Oneself, alone with the Maker. But often, according to the artist, “We’ve lost our way to our hidden sanctuary. That matchlit moment of finding is epitomized by the expression, “Be still…”, and, in response, the red announces “Behold!”

“Soul House” was chosen for an Award of Excellence by the 2019 international publication “Creative Quarterly: The Journal of Art and Design” (Issue 55), also available in September. Two of Funderburk’s artworks are also featured in the international hardback publication “SPLASH 20: Creative Compositions (from the “Best of Watercolor” series, Artists Network/North Light Books) in summer, 2019.
